Good second event with the Boeing club this year. We had a friend staying over the weekend, so I went in early to help set up the course, and then had the friend ride along with me, before heading back home to grill. The course stayed dry for the entirety of my runs, save for a few sprinkles at worst.
I spent most of the event breaking in/figuring out the RS4s & the ST43s, so that the first ever race on these tires wouldn’t be at the track day. For the first few runs, the RS4s felt very squirmy, likely scrubbing off the release mold (stickers still on the tires). That, and the fact that these wheels are 1″ narrower than my auto-x set & the RS4s are 20mm narrower led to a couple sketchy runs in the morning. They improved throughout the day, though I’d say still around 1s behind the auto-x set. I have heard they like heat, and even though it was a cool day, I did not have to spray, which is impressive. I had some difficulty actually getting a lot of heat in the tires as well, probably due to being a different compound than what I’m used to running. They are a good tire, but certainly not the grippiest.
Anyway as such, the lines were off a bit more than usual, leading me to get behind on spacing for the offsets at the back half of the course. The brakes felt very good despite having less tire to work with – the real test will be how they do with the auto-x set back on the car, which should be the next event. It’s clear from the results this setup gives up at least 1s to the RT615k+, moreso likely due to the narrower wheel than the tire itself. I’m more or less convinced to replace these next year and get a different setup, probably the Konig Hypergrams in 18×9.5.
Also tried using the wind muffler on the GoPro – worked out pretty well given how windy it was at the event.
Things to work on (Evo):
- Better lines, car placement, earlier turn-in
- Look ahead more to fix the late steering
- Smooth out steering, one single arc for turns – build more confidence/knowledge in car placement per steering turn
Notes (Evo):
- 0.7 tank, passenger for every run
- Camber at -3.3, -1.9 rear, 0 toe front 0 toe rear
- 36psi all around (RS4s)
- ACD: Gravel, Dampers 6/5 F/R, RSB on stiff
- Pax Points: 9,575
- 2018 Runs: 12 (+6 on RS4s, 6 on RT615k+)
2018 Run Count: 18 (+6 Evo)
