After getting the fender braces & crossmember brace on, I decided it was time to do an alignment. It has been a while, and I wanted to make sure everything was on straight. It wasn’t too far off, just a little bit of toe to adjust. I’m running about -3.5front, -3.5rear, with 0 toe all around. That is a lot of camber in the rear, and maybe a potential source of understeer, but will leave it for the time being. If anything, it’d be nice to get more camber up front, but I’m limited unless I move the bottom adjustment bolts, which I’d like to avoid since it provides less clearance to the suspension.
On the corner weight front, this was a little more interesting. The car has gained quite a bit of weight, as I expected. At 3,233, with about half a tank of gas, the car has gained probably around 50-60lbs. This comes down to 2 major changes since the last weighing – the first being the larger battery I run. The Yellowtop weighs around 35lbs, vs the 12lb AGM battery it replaces. This is in exchange for much more reliable starts, which is going to come in crucial as I may no longer have regular access to a trickle charger. The second change is the cage, which I couldn’t exactly weigh, but guessed it weighed around 40-50lbs. It does replace the harness bar, which was around 10lbs, but that is little consolation.
On the positive however, with all this weight added to the back of the car, for the first time ever, the Evo is under 60% weight in the front, tipping the scales at 59.7%. A big part of what I aimed to do over the last couple of years with these changes was to get the car more balanced in terms of weight, and it’s really exciting to see that it’s actually making a difference. Really not much else I can do at this point, but I think with a full tank of gas, we might even get close to 59% flat. Very satisfied with that.
