2021+ Toyota Venza Oil Change How-To

This is a how-to for the second-gen Toyota Venza (USDM) oil change. If you are a DIYer, want to do more oil changes than Toyota recommends (you should), or have just run out of Toyotacare’s maintenance, this is a very simple, straight-forward job. See below for a detailed step-by-step and a slideshow of important steps. Do all maintenance at your own risk.

Tools required:

  • Ramps or jacks/stands
  • 10mm & 14mm socket
  • 5qts of 0w16 oil – I used this
  • Oil drain pan
  • Oil filter wrench
    • The location of the oil filter is convenient but a little tight. I used a generic filter wrench, but a plier-style wrench may work better here
  • Oil filter
    • I tried to do some research on this, but it was a little tricky to find. The factory oil filter is a Toyota 90915-10009. The one I picked up is a Toyota 90915-YZZN1. As far as I can tell, the only difference is the 10009 was made in Japan, and the N1 was made in Thailand. I purchased a box of 10 on ebay.
  • Drain plug crush washer
  • Funnel
  1. Raise the car on ramps or using jack stands. I chose ramps here, as I service a lot of different cars
  2. Locate the service panel, which hides both the oil drain and and the oil filter. This is held on by four 10mm screws. Remove the screws and the panel.
  3. The oil pan will be right there, and the oil drain plug is a 14mm. Remove and start draining. Loosen the cap or the dipstick to improve drainage.
  4. Once finished, use a new crush washer & replace the drain plug. NOTE*** the old crush washer may be stuck on the pan (mine was). Use a flathead or something to pull it off if so.
  5. Remove the oil filter, which is right next to to the pan. It’s a little tricky/tight to get a real good grip on it, I recommend using a filter wrench/pliers for the task. I dislike sideways mounted filters.
  6. Lubricate the new oil filter’s o-ring and spin the new filter on, I get it on as hand-tight as I can get it, and then add an 8th-16th of a turn using a wrench. This is probably the easiest spot that the oil might leak if not done properly, but you don’t want to repeatedly over-tighten this area either.
  7. Once this is done, button up the service panel with the four 10mm screws.
  8. Add oil using a funnel. I used Mobil 0w16 Advanced Fuel Economy, and the car took roughly 4.5-4.8 quarts of oil. I always add about 4.2-4.3, take the car for a spin, and see where it levels after that.
  9. Clean up and you’re all set! Monitor to make sure no leaks occur.
