I purchased my NGS retrofit kit from Sxth Element, which consisted of the right-hand controls, which now housed a separate circle for the NGS button and shuffled a few of the buttons around. These are OEM factory pieces, and are what come standard on the Elantra N and Kona N. Basically a cosmetic modification, but I had difficulty location the button, especially when driving in anger. This will make it a lot easier to hit when needed, and is no longer located next to the steering assist button.
Items/Tools Required:
10mm socket
Pliers
Screwdriver, flathead (small)
22mm socket
Before shot of the steering wheel – note the very small NGS button. Checkered flag on the blue button there, which is pretty cool.
Make sure to disconnect your battery.
Steer 90 degrees left and insert a screwdriver into the hole on the other side of the steering wheel. I found it easiest to view from outside the windshield. Use a short, thin screwdriver to maneuver inside and release the clip. You’ll notice it a little looser. Rotate the wheel in the other direction and repeat the process to fully release the airbag portion.
There are 3 clips to the airbag portion to remove – unclip these and release them from the plastic buckle at the top.
Once fully disconnected, unclip the white plug off of the wheel and remove the 22mm nut on the steering wheel.
Be sure to note the position of the markings to reinstall the wheel in the same direction. With the nut off, you can work the steering wheel off and bring it inside.
Comparison of new (left) and old (right). NGS is now the red circle button, The checkered flag is an N, steering assist is moved to the left, and the cancel/restart for the cruise control is moved off of the stalk and is its own button now. Fan of all the changes they made here.
Remove the screw that holds the paddle shifters in.
Flip the wheel and pop the paddles out with a small pry tool. Stick a flathead into the clip to work it off.
3 of the 4 screws holding the backing on are shown here – remove all 4 and work the plastic backing off of the wheel.
There are 3 screws holding on the right control unit (on the left) – unscrew to release.
Topmost screw, the other two pictured below. Once removed, you can swap the pieces.
It’s a direct swap, so replace and then reverse the steps:
– 3 screws to tighten down the control module
– clip the new backing into place, making sure you thread the paddle shifter plugs through
– 4 screws to tighten down the plastic backing
– clip the paddle shifters plugs into place, and then click the paddles into place
– flip, 1 screw for each of the paddle shifters
Once reassembled, it can go back on the car. Line up the pink dots to where it was, 22mm bolt back on the center, clip the white plug in, and thread the plugs back through the airbag module and clip them all into place. Then push the airbag module back to the steering wheel, and it’ll click into place.
